Hi all,
I'm in the process of founding a European studbook for Heosemys grandis. If accepted, it will be a part of the European Studbook Foundation (ESF). I have discussed this with the president of ESF.
For the new studbook to be added to ESF, it needs at least 2 participants, and at least 10 bloodlines, i.e. 10 unrelated turtles, or the offspring of 10 unrelated turtles.
Participation in the studbook entails certain responsibilities, but very few obligations: your turtles remain your property. Also, you can have as much privacy as you like. The studbook will, among other things, help preserve genetic diversity in the captive population of the species.
More information on the program can be found here: http://www.studbooks.org/
If you want to participate, please reply here or contact me off-forum. For now, I just need to know how many Giant Asian pond turtles you have, and how many bloodlines they represent. (You cannot register your turtles yet, because the studbook has not yet been endorsed by ESF.)
