Hello.
Just wondering how many people keep their H. grandis outside? I live in Iowa and keep mine out when the temps are 60 and above. The enclosure, I will take pics another day, is fairly large. The water area is a kiddie pool.
My main question is how many of you have watched them eat?? When outside mine graze on any plant material growing in their enclosure. Does anybody else see this behavior?
Thanks,
Barry

Re: How many people keep their grandis outside?
Hi Barry,
I would keep them outside in the summer, if I had a garden. But I don't. Occasionally I take them to a park on sunny days.
Mine graze too if they get the chance. They'll eat anything but grass and trees.

I keep mine outside in a big pen separately when the weather is warm enough. So that is usually May-Sept. THey will graze on grass and just about anything. I need to put their habitats in more sun, right now they just get a couple of hours of sprinkled sun.

Hutsie B, do they graze on grass when they have other plants to graze on?
Mine eat clover, daisies, and dandelions that they find in the grass (see picture above), but grass only accidentally.

I live in Southern California. Mine are in an outdoor pond from around April/May until around November. There, they have a protected pond and dry land in which to live. In the colder months, I have them in a 600-gallon indoor pond that's heated to about 77-80 degrees. I've had three of these for about 20 years and they seem to do well. They love fish and trout chow and only occasionally nibble on plants such as clover or high-grade dog kibble. They co-exist with my Asian box turtles and there has never been any trouble. I am 81 and expect they may outlive me. But I have made arrangements for their adoption by an expert turtle caregiver when I depart.
