Some question for Rua Dat Lon

Dear all,

I come from Vietnam and I have 2 questions, can anyone help me?

1. How do we know the age of heosemys grandis by obervation?
2. Can they lay egg in the feeding condition?

Nice pictures! Did you breed the small ones?
With young animals you can estimate the age by counting the growth rings on the scutes. But as they grow older (>10 years) the rings become increasingly unreliable, and in older animals they fade away completely.
I am not sure what you mean by your second question (?). If you mean: lay eggs while feeding at the same time, then no. Laying eggs requires their full attention.

Thanks for your guide, I will study to know the age of my tortoise.
About second question, I mean can they reproduce if I continue keep them living in man-made (not nature) environment?
For small ones, I have 6 H.grandis and 2 H. anandalii.

Hi Rua Dat Lon,
Okay, I understand. Yes they can reproduce in a man-made environment, especially if you live in or near their natural range, where you have the right temperature, humidity and daylight intensity. I don't know what triggers their reproduction but these factors must play a role in it.
In which part of Vietnam do you live?

I haven't been in Saigon unfortunately. I've only seen Vietnam from an airplane window, flying from Taipei to Bangkok. I would like to visit Vietnam some day, especially the Mekong river delta.

Dear Marnix,

My big couple has some things unusual, male bites female at gular scutes, only on this place, are they trying to mate?
Male: 4.3kgs.
Female 4.1kgs
Temperature: 26 to 32 celsius degree.
Now is the end of raining season of south of Vietnam, it usually rains about 30 minutes from 4 to 6 pm, daily.
I wonder that, should i continue keep this situation or separate them?

Hello:
It sounds like the male is courting the female which is good unless he roughs her up too much in which case they should be separated. It's been a while since I talked with anybody about this species but it appears that larger males can, on occasion, be very rough with females during breeding season so they should be watched during that time. It doesn't always happen but it can. Good Luck with them. Hopefully they'll breed and lay some eggs for you!
